Five-step design process
- Collect data and requirements – design basis, environmental data, equipment loads, specified codes.
- Preliminary design – structural concept, initial sizing, weight estimate.
- Detailed analysis – analysis models, load combinations, strength, stability and fatigue checks.
- Evaluation and optimisation – weight reduction, simpler fabrication, constructability.
- Drawings and reports – calculation reports, construction drawings and full specifications.
Every stage passes 2–3 levels of engineering checks before issue.
