PET Polyester Acoustic Panels: How They Work and How to Choose

PET polyester acoustic panels have become the go-to finish for offices, schools, restaurants and homes. Made from heat-pressed polyester fibre, they are light, colourful, easy to cut and safer to handle than mineral wool. This guide explains how they work, which specifications to read and how to choose.
What are PET acoustic panels made of?
Millions of PET (polyethylene terephthalate) fibres are bonded into an open, porous structure. Many ranges use more than 80% recycled polyester, with a density of about 180–220 kg/m³, a standard sheet of 1220 × 2440 mm and thicknesses from 6 to 24 mm.
How they absorb sound
- Sound waves enter the voids between fibres.
- Air moving in those voids is slowed by friction against the fibres.
- Part of the sound energy turns into heat, so less sound reflects back into the room.
PET panels work best from 500 to 4000 Hz, where speech, everyday noise and most instruments sit. At low frequencies (around 125 Hz) performance drops; thicker panels (25–50 mm) or an air gap behind the panel help.

Do PET panels soundproof a room?
They mainly absorb sound inside the room and cut reverberation. Blocking sound between rooms needs heavy, layered construction; acoustic panels are the finishing layer.
What thickness should I choose?
9–12 mm suits offices and meeting rooms. Listening rooms and studios benefit from thicker panels or an air gap to handle low frequencies.
