TURMASOL aero engine combustor

The TURMASOL aero engine combustor is a heat-resistant-alloy sheet-metal assembly where fuel burns with compressed air to produce the hot gas that drives the turbine. TURMASOL builds annular combustors by forming, welding and machining cooling holes in nickel and cobalt alloy sheet.

Function

The combustor contains and stabilises the flame, mixes cooling air through rows of wall holes and delivers combustion gas to the turbine. It runs at very high temperature, so it needs heat-resistant materials and tightly controlled welds.

Manufacturing technology

Fabrication process

Laser/waterjet cutting → press forming → single-piece machining → welding/brazing assembly → vacuum heat treatment → final machining → mechanical joining (riveting, bolting) → final inspection (FPI, CMM, vision measuring).
